First time renter's question? A friend and I are looking for an apartment. He is going to be leaving for the military at some point but we don't know exactly when, could be 5 months or could be a full year. We arent trying to get some swanky place or anything, just something comfortable because we are really busy with our new companies and other stuff we do so we wont really be there much. The particular price range we are looking at is affordable enough that if he did have to leave earlier than later, I would still be able to cover the cost alone without much issue but would rather not go that route because I wouldnt need the extra bedroom/bathroom/expenses. What we were thinking was only putting his name on the lease though, that way if he does leave earlier than expected, we would have a legitimate claim to break the lease and I wouldnt be stuck with my portion of the lease, so I could then just try and move a 1 bedroom or another roommate. Are we idiots or what are pros/cons to this idea? How should we go about doing this? Extra detail-We live in San Antonio, Texas if that matters. We both make enough money to at least triple the annual lease amount by ourselves. The reason I dont just blow him off and get my own place is because I am knowledgeable about the program he is pursuing in the military and will be able to really help him prepare properly (also were just good friends and dont want to live by ourselves if we can help it-were only 23) Thanks Rocky-Thanks for your answer.
