Q&A
  • is italy more or less expensive than the us? i'm going in the summer, and trying to figure out how much to save up for shopping (mainly clothes) i know dollars are worth less the euros, but that's not what i'm asking. like the average american shirt is $20, but nice ones are on average $40 and cheep is $10. what about italy? because even though dollars are worth less, if the average NICE shirt is around $15, than italy is still cheaper. i'm also going to spain, & france so if you know the prices there, that'd be helpful. another thing (if you know), how is their fashion? like do they have good, fashionable clothing? if you know a popular store in these country's (perferably that has an online website and is NOT in america) can you give me the link? just to see what style their clothes is! (don't worry about it if you don't already know) thanks so much for any help you can give!
    • It depends where in Italy and where in America you are comparing. If you are comparing San Francisco or New York to Milan then the cost won't make much of a difference but if your comparing Texas or Colorado to Italy then Italy is expensive. In general, yes Italy is more expensive than the USA.
  • How much would it cost to live in California? One of my realistic dreams was to live in California when I am older. I would like to know how much it would cost to travel there, stay there (if any paper work or something similar was required) and finally if I should buy a house or live in a apartment. Can you please talk about the price separately for each stage and then the total. Thank you for you cooperation. A quick note is I live in the UK (Birmingham).
    • For general questions about immigration, you can check the Department of State website. There is specific information about these issues on the US consular site for London. Generally it's easy to visit with a tourist visa (nothing but a UK passport is required for entry) but long term is a different story. The website I mentioned specifically says that the US doesn't have any sort of "retire in the US" sort of immigration policy in place, and it's generally a matter of securing work of some sort. Merely saying you have several million pounds that you wish to spend or invest doesn't seem to be enough. As for housing, it depends where. In Silicon Valley, a modest house that's not in one of the more affluent areas would cost at least $2000/month. Going into an area such as San Francisco could run far more. It's best to check a real estate website that offers flat rentals and see what you can find. You can pick a town and look it up on Craig's list.
  • Where is a cheap place to live in San Francisco? I'll be living in San Francisco from May 10th to August 21st (inclusive.) For that 3+ months period, I'll need to find a cheap enough place to live in. $1,000 a month is what I'd be willing to pay and obviously I wouldn't expect anything special about my abode, either in terms of location or facilities. I could stretch my budget a little bit extra if needs be. I must stress it is within San Francisco I want to live in and not Oakland, Daly City, Marin County or anywhere else outside the city. I'm willing to either share a place too if I can't find a place on my own. Any advice whatsoever is highly appreciated as it will be my first time being in San Fran! :)
    • You'd have trouble just outright renting a place for the period, especially at only $1,000/month. The rental market is competitive - many people spend that long just looking for a place, and available apartments are pretty much always taken the first day they're shown. So this leaves you with sublets and residential hotels. You can sublet a room (doubtful your own apartment) for that much quite easily, but the scheduling would also be at the whims of the person subletting it (ie: might not necessarily align with your timeframe). Best option would be residential hotels in the Tenderloin. If you do a Yelp search, you can find some cheap ones... about $800/month. Most in that price range are quite small and have a shared bathroom, so make sure you're being honest about that not expecting anything special part. Also bear in mind that they have limits on how long you can stay (about a month), so you'll have to shuffle around a few times. And book now. Effectively, it's cheap housing (albeit temporary) in the city, and books up fast. You could also do the shuffle with sublets (and may be able to find one for the entire period), but you'll have less control over the timeframe for that, and may have to figure it out on the fly (without anywhere to go if you don't get something in time). Search for one for the entire time... if not, residential hotels would give you more certainty that you have a place to stay.
  • Moving to San Francisco... need advice!!? Okay, so I'm moving from downtown Sacramento, CA to San Francisco, CA for school (at SFSU) with my boyfriend. Currently, our rent is $525/month, including utilities. We know the living expenses will undoubtedly go up when we move to San Fran. So we're asking people whats the best living situation. I care about a sanitary higher standard of living and I care about PRICE. *sigh, doesn't everyone?* But we also care about privacy, because we are... rather intimate... regularly! I would say privacy is most important for that reason. (next is PRICE!) I'd like soundproof walls if I could have em! hehe! I've always wanted to live in a loft or a condo.... But I know they are way too pricey in SF for us college students. And we plan to RENT cheaply, if possible! With that being said, what situation would YOU recommend? Living in a crowded apartment? A tiny loft? a condo RENTAL? a Co-op? Hmm. What else?... Please let me know what you think. Please no smart-mouth responses. Don't waste our time. And please don't waste your own time!
    • There are no lofts near SFSU. It is all residential mostly homes. A 1-bdrm condo near the college would cost about $2000 a month. You can try some areas for apartments including West Portal, Westlake, Daly City, Ingleside, Park Merced, Outer Sunset. You should rent a room for a while and look around the neighborhoods. SFSU is a long way from any cheaper neighborhoods.
  • where can I find egyptian red tea in the states? I live in the United States and was wondering where I could possibly find some Egyptian Red tea...I looked on one website where I could order it, but it would ship from New Zealand so shipping prices are crazy expensive! I live in the San Francisco bay area so if anyone knows of a place where I can buy it here, that'd be awesome...or if I can buy it online from any place in the US. Thanks!
    • Search around for Middle Eastern Markets that may or may not carry it here in the USA.
  • When to buy tickets from SFO to ICN? I'm going from San Francisco to Incheon, South Korea next summer from the tentative dates of June 21 - August 19. June 21 has for a 100 dollar difference depending if I depart on June 21 or June 22 on Singapore Air (I don't need to be in Korea until June 25, but I'm perfectly find with getting there earlier). Right now the cheapest is Singapore Air for 1065$. Last year I spent time in Korea again in the summer for about half the time (June-July), but I booked my flight in March/April and it cost around 1280 and it was on Delta. Would booking the Singapore Air flight be wise for the price? Some airlines haven't planned that far in advance to Korea, but then all other airlines are currently offering flights for the summer have priced their flights 1300+.
    • $1065 is a pretty good price these days, and Singapore Airlines is one of the very best airlines in the business. Their in-flight entertainment, food and service is award winning. Although you MIGHT get a better price by waiting, it won't be by much, especially on an airline as good as Singapore Airlines. Prices are always higher in the summer months, I would buy the ticket now for that price.
  • Where can you find cheap or bargain traditional Korean clothing? Well I've been looking for a place that sells Hanbok for guys for a relatively cheap or at least a fair price. I mainly need this for a wedding in a few months but I also want to wear it casually (I'm a bit weird =P). To be even more precise, I just need the coat (Jeogori I think its called?) and the pants (Baji). If anyone knows any sites or even places around the Bay Area (San Francisco would be ideal) that would be great.
    • Ebay
  • How does Philadelphia rank compared to other big cities? How does Philadelphia rank compared to other big cities? I am planning to move to Philadelphia next year. I am an aspiring actor who does not see the need in moving to much larger markets, such as NYC, just to end up competing with other actors and not have many chances. I would much rather be CLOSE to NYC without actually living there. Also, I want to live in a BIG city with lots of culture, arts, cheap housing prices and a booming NIGHTLIFE! With all of this said, how does Philadelphia compare to other cities, such as New York, Chicago, Washington, DC, Atlanta, San Francisco and Los Angeles? Is it a good place to experience all of the above? If not, then where else would you suggest?
    • NJ is """""BOOMING!!!!!"""" (O_O) with BIG - NIGHT FUN and it's near NYC I won't ever compete with the string of people being shown in California.
  • When should I move to San Francisco, if i want to become a doctor ? Let me start out by saying that i am in year 10 and nowhere near being able to do any of this, but i have to plan my life and try my very hardest to make my dreams come true. I have two passions/dreams in life; a) I want to become a doctor b) I want to live in San Francisco, CA I get that these are both extremely difficult dreams to achieve, which sucks, but really i don't want anything else. Why it's hard to become a doctor is obvious, but why its hard for me to move to san Francisco is because i live in Perth, Western Australia. So, someone please help me. If i want to become a doctor but also want to move to San Francisco how, and when will i have to do it ? Like, should i try and get over there for college, or medical school, or after that. And, will i be able to afford it? I know San Francisco is absolutely ridiculous when it comes to rent prices, and i know absolutely no-one over there. Yeah, I'm probably insane, but this is the only way i could ever see me living my life. Please someone help? Thank you xx
    • Funny, I just met an international student from Perth. I would suggest moving to San Francisco AFTER you've finished medical school. The San Francisco Bay Area has some very prestigious hospitals to complete residencies at with UCSF and Stanford for starters. However, these two medical schools are also insanely difficult to gain admission into even for native Californians, let alone an international student. There is also only 1 medical school in the city of San Francisco - University of California, San Francisco. Even Stanford is about an hour's drive from the city. Cost of living is relatively high, although less so than the nice parts of LA or Manhattan. Not knowing anyone is probably not a problem, there is a VERY diverse population in San Francisco. Honestly, I'm a San Francisco native and I also want to go to medical school (currently a college senior). I love the city and the region but unfortunately I don't really see myself able to return permanently until I'm already done with school and in my residency. Good luck with your endeavors!
  • what would be a good Christmas gift for my Boyfriend? for Christmas i wanted to get my boyfriend something nice but something he will love. he loves the Dallas cowboys and San Francisco giants, but i'm looking for something that is a reasonable price
