Q&A
  • How much does San Diego's Comic Con Cost? Yes, I would like to know the prices for tickets/passes for Comic-Con for Floridians.
    • Took less than 15 seconds on Google to find out http://www.comic-con.org/cci/2013-badge-purchase
  • Used 2003 ford Focus? I'm thinking about buying a used 03 ford focuz zx3 for around 5000-5500 from a used car dealership. I did my research and read they are good cars and I read mixed reviews ahout the place public motors santa ana. I liked the car except it wasn't as quite as id like but it wasn't lous to the point where I felt something was wrong and I read that noisy is common. I just would like somr advice what to look for and anything that could help me. The engine is a 2.0L DOHC MPI 16-VALVE I
    • These are good basic transportation cars. They do have their weaknesses 1. Stay away from the 2.0 liter smp engine. You want either the 2.0 ZTEC or the 2.3 liter. It will clearly indicate when you open the hood, look on the valve cover. 2. It is very common for these to have bad motor mounts, particularly on the passenger side but can be on the driver's side as well. Evidence is engine vibrates at idle and shakes the car. 3. It is very common for these to have bad bearings in the passenger front axle. Hard to detect but there will be a grinding or grating sound from that side of the car. 4. $5000 is high! I live in San Diego so prices are the same. For $5k the car should have under 60k miles, all new tires and be either the upper level model 4 door sedan or wagon, automatic, and the a/c and everything else should work. 5. For pricing check Kelly Blue Book site www.kbb.com . Also check www.edmunds.com, use the research tab, it is more difficult to use than the kbb but give good info. 6. If you know little to nothing about cars spend the time to have a good mechanic that is familiar with Ford Focus and can look for the things I listed above [mounts, axle, etc.] 7. At around 100k miles the ZTEC engine requires the timing belt be changed and usually the water pump as well since they virtually take apart the passenger side of the engine. Figure $450. The 2.3 liter is more desirable b/c it has a metal timing chain, not a rubber belt. SMP engine fails at about 80-90k miles and; the car is junk. Get proof the timing belt was changed on ZTEC. If it breaks the engine is trash.
  • What airlines has the lowest price for travel from NYC to L.A. or San Diego ? What airlines has the lowest price for travel from NYC to L.A. or San Diego? Non-stop. Expedia and fly.com and all the other are very high. Jetblue is the lowest price I can find. Is anyone lower? Thank you.
    • Check on www.bookingbuddy.com. The site is amazing for comparing all discount sites at once.
  • Moving out, what can I expect cost wise? My best friend and I are planning on moving out by August of this year to San Diego for college. She invited one of her friends to move in with us and we are planning on getting a one room apartment. There are some worries I have though. Before today I was just thinking about major expenses we would be facing (rent, pg and e) but now i realized there were other costs to like furniture! I was just wondering do you remember how much your monthly expense was when you first moved out of your parents house? I just really need advice. Thank you!
    • First off - I do NOT know the prices of places in San Diego. I'm from Toronto (Canada) and so my numbers will be in $CAD not $USD *but* they are pretty similar. Monthly Expenses: Rent: You'll need to pay first and last month's rent up front. Around here, I'd budget for $700-800 monthly rent. You may be able to get it cheaper. But that's something that is dependent on your area. Utilities: budget for $100/month (hydro, heat, etc.) Internet/TV: I personally don't have TV/cable so I don't need to worry about that but our internet costs $62/month Transit pass: Toronto transit is $128.50/month. Cell phone: My cell phone bill is $70/month Food: Between my boyfriend and I, we spend about $50/week on food (so about $200/month). But it depends on your eating habits. Entertainment: keep in mind that you're going to want to go out - party, movies, bars, etc. That isn't something I can help you estimate but it's something you're going to have to look into One-time purchases: I got a lot of my items like these either from my parents or from family members or from second hand stores. So they were cheap. - bed (I got the bed I used when I was living at my parents since they didn't need it anymore) - dresser (I got the dresser I used from my parents as well) - computer desk (I purchased one from a second hand store) - computer chair - kitchen stuff (pots, pans, plates, cups, utensils) - household stuff (soap, shampoo, toilet paper, towels) Those are things that you'll probably need right away. Some things that may not be a priority: - couch - kitchen table - bookshelf - coffee table - chairs
  • Where is the best market or grocery store to get seafood in San Diego? At a decent price. And mostly for shellfish, oysters clams etc
    • thuan phat in linda vista or 99 ranch in clairemont
  • what are the differences between the people in Santa Barbara and San Diego? Thanks!
    • Santa Barbara has only a population of Middle, Upper, and High Classes. San Diego has all the range of population: Poor, Middle, Upper, and High Classes. Santa Barbara's weather range is from freezing all the way to 65 degrees. San Diego's weather range is always warm all the way to 70 degrees all year long. Santa Barbara's location is safer from the state's borderlines. San Diego's location is most vulnerable from the state's borderline, where people from 'All Over The World' cross illegally, thus many problems for its residents. Santa Barbara's prices are very high, from groceries all the way to real state. San Diego's prices vary according to it's locations, but most parts things are most affordable.
  • I am severely depressed for what some people think to be "wrong reasons," what should I do? THIS IS LONG BUT I WILL APPRECIATE ANYONE WHO CAN READ IT...I have been depressed my whole life, even as a child. I was picked on by everyone and just haven't been interested in making friends. Not to say I blame everyone for bullying me I was admittedly a weird person, still am today. I simply do not like people. I love being alone. I have grown a lot of resentment towards humanity in general and no longer identify with this life. I believe in reincarnation. I have attempted past life regression and found that I probably killed myself in my past. Please if you do not believe in this do not give me an answer questioning my beliefs. I respect yours and hope you can respect mine. Every person I have gotten close to ends up either being a bad influence on me or cutting me off for selfish reasons. Another problem is I cannot help but be jealous of anyone whom I have called a friend since their lives are simply better. They are wealthier, have kinder parents, and are able to travel and see the world, something my father deprived me of so that he could build his stupid house in San Diego. I live in Los Angeles with my mother and sister in a house about 50 feet away from the freeway and a major street. My father took out second mortgages on the house through my parents' marriage leaving the price of the property to be very low. (my father I have considered disowning since he essentially abandoned my family and left my mentally unstable sister to be taken care of solely by my mother who deals with severe depression as well. I love my sister and do all that I can for her but she has robbed my parents of well over a million dollars leaving the rest of us to struggle so I am understandably a bit unhappy.) My mother abandoned her career when she married my father since she thought he was worth more than he lead on (gold digger). She is in her mid 60's now and has resigned herself to misery and hopeless resentment towards my father. I have tried an insane amount of different depression medication regiments, none of which have worked. I tried hypnotherapy, acupuncture, biofeedback (don't ask) and meditation. I simply cannot get over this feeling of inadequacy coupled with elitism. I know I need an attitude adjustment but just can't bring myself to it. Any suggestions?
    • When I get down over that stuff I tend to sit in a safe place and Pick either a garden or in an inside part of the house. First, instead of looking at what you perceive is a better life; look at what you have and what you need. You have shelter, so that's one worry you don't have to deal with. You have food so that's not something you have to deal with. So far your life sounds pretty good! Look at doing what you can with what you have, like the windows could use repair perhaps, do you have the things to fix them? Perhaps they could get cleaned up so they look nicer until you get it. As far as the residual effects of your past life. That you must come to terms with. I also killed myself by other's hands in the past. That's a long and unimportant tale. You can't go back to take back any of the pain you caused on your family. You can look at why you decided to kill yourself and try to fix that, because maybe your depression is caused from the fact your repeating the same things as before. You can't spend your life looking in the past or you miss out on what's going on now. Really find things you'd like to do, what is it that makes you feel happy. For me it's to grow the flowers for the monarch butterflies to thrive in makes me happy, as well as writing music, so I spend much time thinking about that stuff. Hope it helps.
  • Do Priceline's "Name Your Own Price" bids include taxes and fees? Hi, My boyfriend and I would like to give naming our own price a go for our upcoming trip to San Diego, but I'm not quite sure how it works with regards to taxes and fees. So, my question for all y'all who have Priceline "Name Your Own Price" experience... Is it a think-it's-a-great-deal-and-BAM-taxes-and-fees-out-the-wazoo type situation, or no? Thanks a bunch! :) Sorry; that was supposed to read "...-and-then-BAM-taxes-and-fees type situation..."!
    • No. Once a fare is agreed upon, which theoretically could be $1.00, the taxes and fees will be added on.
  • 2000 Jeep wrangler with 7 previous owners? Hi I am just about to buy a jeep wrangler 2000 looks very clean and the price is fair. I how ever just found that that it has had 7 previous owners. the original owner had the car for 6 years in lived in VA, then the car was SOLD in FL. every other owner have had it for 1 year or less, the car has been in CA, San Diego for the most amount of time. When I asked the current owner why he is selling it after only 6 months, he said it's not a very good car as the first car. I really want a wrangler as my second car, and my biggest fear is that there is something mechanically wrong with the car. the jeep is a manual (stick shift) is this a red flag? should I walk away or buy it, do you care about how many previous owners? The jeep is not lifted, but it does have 33" tires.
    • :::Not a red flag at all::: It would be a good *second* vehicle for you. Whatever engine it may have, it is not a Chrysler engine but an AMC / American Motors Corp. motor (2.5L or 4.0L) that has a reputation for reliability. Just be sure that the clutch is OK and ask when the last time it was changed, make sure the brakes are good as 33" tires are definitely not stock tire size & look at the front differential cover to make sure it isn't bashed up where lubricant may leak out. The reason it has had so many owners is gasoline prices are much higher since the year 2000. Not only that, the design of the Wrangler is not really conducive for being an economy car: it's shaped almost like a mailbox, the undercarriage is exposed making for a lackluster drag coefficient and the inline six engine was designed when JFK was still alive. That's why the plastic and aluminum disposable Japanese/cheap American cars pass it so easily ON the road, however, off-road the Wrangler has no real equal except a U.S. Army Humvee H1 (not an H2: re-skinned Tahoe). Not even the new plastic Wrangler JK is equal to the older iron Jeep TJ even if it makes more horsepower. It's low-RPM Torque that moves cars and trucks; Horsepower helps sell them. If your prospective Jeep has a 4.0L six and it's a screaming deal, then get it as it would be good back-up transportation and there when times/weather get bad and you need to go to point A to point B sitting down. Hope this helps...
  • Moving from Georgia to California? I've lived in Atlanta(Marietta), Georgia for too long now, and have seen most of my close friends move, and my family tear up from a divorce. I've worked at Pizza Hut as a cook, delivery driver and a Shift Manager for about 6 years now. I have poor credit, and no family support anymore to go back and finish school and have become tired and bored with spending my paychecks to pay insurance, gas, and my under the table rent. Not to mention my distaste for Marietta and Atlanta lifestyle and weather. I have always wanted to go back to the pedestrian/longboarding lifestyle, not having to drive anymore or pay car insurance closer to water that isn't Savananna with an expanded Urban lifestyle, and ultimately taking a risk for a new experience. I have 2 friends that moved to Washington and Virginia(where they aren't happy and in a similar boat) who are down to meet up and migrate to California band together again and try out a State and goal of common interest, aware that it's harder than it sounds with the Living Cost, Job Economy, tax's, and other hardships we weren't exposed to or aware of back in Small Yuppy town East Cobb Marietta. I am thinking San Diego, avoiding LA as suggested by many, but would like input from Cali-people or someone thats seen both. I'm 23 amerasian and an insomniac, so I seek nightlife. I have full availability for work, and probably able to Transfer Pizza Huts, though I seek something new. Loyal, experienced, hard working with wonderful work ethic. I have a high school diploma, but haven't finished any college, and in a position where to survive here alone, schooling isn't a choice. I want to put aside the car and walk and/or use public transportation. I'd like to be near the city, or in one. I am half-chinese-half caucasian. Discrimination is strange in Georgia, always weird looks in Atl, I don't want to move somewhere where its outrageous and threatening, but rathermore welcome. I hate humidity, but love the heat with a breeze. I wouldnt mind being in distance of a beach by an hour or two, and would be nice if it was like florida or tv blue. Savannah was all brown and nasty. Would also like suggestions on living situations. I will be joining up with 2 friends, and we plan to live with eachother. So an area with not so outrageous living Cost would be a nice thought to also have in mind. As i've heard from research and angles, stay in ga, finish school, go somewhere else. paradise comes with a price, and its harder than I think. I'm aware, and still pursueing this goal. So i just seek a little constructive advice, answers, suggestions or even connect with some people out in Cali to reach out to and maybe begin social networking with. thank you
