Q&A
  • How much would it cost to move from Virginia, USA to Murcia, Spain? How much per average price would it be to travel from US, Virginia, Dulles Airport to Spain, in Murcia? How much would the average cost be to live in a house or an apartment monthly and yearly? I'm thinking of moving to Spain when I turn 22-24. [If there are no airports in Murcia, I switch my plan to Madrid, Spain]
    • Your question is flagged "Singapore", so I don't know whether this would apply, but are you sure you can get a work visa in Spain? From what I've read the unemployment rate in Spain is pretty high, so I'd think it would be very hard to find a job there, unless you have a rare skill of some kind. At your age, I doubt that's the case. You'd have to check with overseas shippers to find out how much it would cost to ship things. I don't think anyone here would know that, since this is the "Travel" section. Do a search on the Internet for companies in your area that do that. I'm guessing it's going to be pretty expensive and that you'd want to take only the bare essentials.
  • For immigrants of Spain, do you think the Spanish dream exists and has Spain met your expectations? How? For my Migrations class, my group is researching whether or the the Spanish dream exists for immigrants like the American dream for the United States. Does the Spanish dream exist for you, and if it does, has Spain met your expectations? If so, how? If no, why not?
    • Spain is a popular tourist destination for tourists from Northern Europe (British, Scandinavian, Irish, Dutch, German…) who are attracted mainly to the mild climate and long summer, compared to the short and unreliable summer they have at home. With property prices and the cost of living in Spain, being much lower than in Northern Europe, many Northern Europeans invested their retirement savings in a property in Spain, and have come here to live with the dream of a “all year round holiday”. Many many more aspire to the same. If there ever was a “Spanish Dream” (and it is not a popular used phrase like the American dream) I would say this is it. The Mediterranean coast and Balearic Islands are the most popular destinations for northern Europeans who come to Spain to retire and live the “Spanish dream”. Areas such as in Malaga, Mallorca and Menorca, Murcia have sizeable northern European populations, and there are many businesses (restaurants, supermarkets, estate agents, etc…) so they can feel at home, but a sunnier version of home with better beaches. For many the dream came true, and it may have lived up to and even exceeded their expectations. I would say this is especially the case for those who have managed to adapt and integrate themselves into the Spanish way of life, (rather than those who try to resist it). For others, the dream has not lived up to their expectations, and they have not been able to overcome language and cultural differences. Many have made bad investments, having not sufficiently researched the properties they were buying, or having taken bad advice. Others especially as they reach old age and their health worsens decide to return home to be closer to family, and to benefit with a social security system that they are more familiar with. Personally my Spanish dream started much younger, and I was lucky enough to find a good job, and enjoy the Spanish way of life so much so, that I now feel more at home in Spain than northern Europe. As with any dream, I think for it to live up to your expectations: first you need to research and make sure those expectations are reasonable, and then you have to be open to the unexpected, embrace change and adapt to new experiences, find opportunities in calamities and take the best of what comes in front of you.
  • How far are murcia and alicante airports from benidorm? which is the best one to get if you are thinking of going to benidorm. cheers
    • There is only one winner here & that is Alicante Airport. Alicante Airport to Benidorm is approx. 58kms (36 miles) and the transfer takes 45mins Murica Airport is around 140kms (87 miles) from Benidorm and takes around 1hrs 30mins to get there. In addition to the much shorter distance, there is a better choice of transfers from Alicante Airport meaning the journey can be done quite cheaply by shuttle service or a direct bus. Whenever I go I use the services of "lowcosttaxis" or "shuttledirect", both of whom offer a good, reasonably priced service to & from your acommodation.
  • Ben
What are the cheapest airlines to use in the UK? Im looking to go to murcia or alicante airport from bristol in july/ august, i've never booked flights before as im only 16, do you know what are the cheapest airlines to use and any tips on how to get cheap flights?
    • Airlines flying from Bristol, to the destinations you have named, are EasyJet (to Alicante & Murcia), Ryanair (Alicante) & Thomson Airways (Alicante). You can fly with all 3 airlines providing you are 16yrs old. In order to get the best prices you really do need to be booking as soon as possible, as seats are sold in batches and do increase quite quickly, especially for the months you wish to travel. http://www.easyjet.com/asp/en/book/index.asp?lang=EN http://www.ryanair.com/en http://flights.thomson.co.uk/en/index.html
  • Need to find cheap flights!!? Going to spain in June, i need to find cheap flights! I need to fly to either Alicante or Murcia... Ive looked on Ryan air and Easy jet and they are a bit too much money when you add on luggage prices and what not... If theres any good travel companies or anything you could help me with Any tips on saving money or something, anything appreciated!! Thanks!!
    • I'm afraid that if EasyJet & Ryanair are too expensive then you have little chance of getting to Spain, as flights will not be available cheaper with any other airline. You will be able to reduce the cost if you could possibly travel with hand luggage only. Ryanair have a limit of 10kgs, with measurement limits of 55x40x20cms, whilst EasyJet have no weight limit providing your bag/case doesn't exceed the measurements of 56x45x25cms. https://easyjet.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5/~/what-is-my-hand-luggage-allowance%3F

We have searched an searched and googled all that we can so any info would be BRILLIANT!!!! Also we are going on holiday be4 with family and friends, they are all coming through to see how we are and where we will be living (in other words to check up) so any idea's of the best place to get a villa, town house or anything that as 3 to 4 bedrooms with pool at a reasonable price for us to rent for four weeks??? xx
    • You can look on the property portals like www.thinkspain.com or www.kyero.com ( in addition to the others that have been recommended ) but these are all likely to have been listed by Property Agencies. There are still many properties available for rent that are not listed on portals - you could try looking in the local newspaper for what's available ( Google ' Round Town News ' or " costa calida news ' to have a look at their on-line issues ) - Take a look at this link, which will tell you little about the legalities Behand any contracts that you may be asked to sign - http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/30-property-rental-the-tenant.html
  • Hi all, driving to Murcia/Spain in august, anyone no roughly how much it might cost, petrol and tolls ect.? My girlfriend and I have already booked the Northfolkline ferry to Dunkerque, then have 2 days to drive to Murcia. Just wandering about best routes, toll and fuel prices. Maybe even a good place in France to stop overnight? Thanks
    • From Dunkerque to Murcia is 1912 kms (1866 on m/ways) and should take about 17hrs 38mins (16hrs 48mins on m/ways). Toll costs and petrol is estimated to cost 275.20euros. This information is all contained in the link below, which also gives hotels & speed cameras on the route.

How long is the drive between , Murcia airport and Calpe.? We got flights to Murcia at a great price , we are wondering how long it will take to get to the resort. Thanks.
    • I think the first answer is a little misleading when he says it will take 4 hours,it will if you cycle there, but in car it will take about 1 1/2 hours its about 15 min beyond Benidorm
