Q&A

  • TRAVELING IN EUROPE?????????????!? I plan to go to Europe to Budapest,Hungary then take a train to Oradea,Romania and then from there to Athens,Greece. I use yahoo maps for time and directions and from Budapest to Oradea is about 3 hours and from Oradea to Athens is about 16 hours but they go by car. How long is that by train, how much are the cheapest tickets because I dont know need anything expensive, and does anyone know a site where I can google map and directions by train? Please someone with experience answer. Thanks
    • There is a map for all the rail connections in Europe, or at least all major ones: http://www.interrailnet.com/downloads/interrail/map_InterRail2008_part1.pdf It has a small inset with general travel times, but those are mostly based on the fast international trains. A good site to find travel times in much of Europe is the German rail planner in English: http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml But it will not have the prices of the tickets. For that you will need either the rail planner page of the country, or if traveling between two countries, either end will do, or rely on the information of sites like Rail Europe, who never do check the cheap fares if you book early: http://www.raileurope.com/index.html Or do your homework on a site like the man in seat sixty-one: http://www.seat61.com/ Who has almost all information you are asking about, but in a huge site. To find the national rail planner sites, if seat 61 can not help you there, just google the name of the country and train times or train tickets. That will almost always get you one. And remember, if you see a price online, it may mean that it is a reduction fee only available for the people booking early, and restricted to that train only. As a general rule, travel times by car and by train are often alike, but as trains sometimes do not have connections, the actual travel might take longer. But in some countries there are trains that are much faster than cars and less likely to get delayed (traffic jams) that you can only take it as rough guide at best.
