Q&A
  • First time to Amsterdam, where should we stay? We would like to stay somewhere near the Dam square or in a central location. We are a middle aged couple looking for a clean, quiet, comfortable room with good bedding that provides internet. Would like to keep it under $200 per night. We will be doing all the tourist stuff including going to the Tulip gardens. Any suggestions or recommendations?
    • I visit Amsterdam frequently and use this site for hotels: http://www.hotels.nl/ I usually stay at De Roode Leeuw (right around the corner from Dam Square) or the Barbizon Palace which is near Centraal station and convenient to Dam Square. Depending on exactly when you plan to be there, those might be a bit above your price range. there are lots of other choices in the area though. You might also check the Park Plaza Victoria which is at the other end of the Damrak from Dam Square. There are a lot of tours that cover Keukenhof, but if you want more time in the garden, take the train to Schiphol or Leiden. You can buy a combined round-trip bus ticket and garden entrance from either place that will allow you the full day if you want. I prefer going from Leiden because there's an earlier bus and you can catch a train back to Amsterdam via Haarlem. That takes you through several bulb fields en route. There's a ticket booth in Leiden station.
  • Visiting Netherlands 2012 - Amsterdam, tulip fields (by bicycle)? Hello! I'm going to visit Netherlands. I'm going by train from Germany and taking my bicycle with. I would like to see Amsterdam and tulip fields and also Keukenhof Gardens. 1) I have two possible dates for visiting - one is from 10 April - 15 April which would be best for me and second from 29 April - 4 May. What would be better date? This year spring is warm. 2) I'm going to use mostly bicycle. Is it possible to go from Amsterdam to tulip fields by bike? On map it looks like about 25km. 3) Is it possible to get to Keukenhof Gardens / Lisse by train? Is it allowed to take bicycle with? If yes what are total cost for the ticket? 4) What are best places to see farmer's tulip fields? I have seen in map they are mostly near Lisse. 5) Is there anything else to see outside Amsterdam? For example windmills or anything else?
    • A lot of information on the tourist site, also in German http://www.iamsterdam.com/de/visiting/praktischeinformationen/contactatcb 1 30 april is Queens day, the trains to Amsterdam will be crowded. No space for a bicycle and almost no space for people. Be aware that there are a lot of bicycles stolen. So use a place were you can put your bike inside or use a guarded place. on te next site addresses were it's cheap, first 24 hour for free http://www.stallingamsterdam.nl/pub/stalling/locker/index.htm 2 I think its around 33 km. http://www.routenet.nl/route.aspx?stations=543814_6860192___10**_Amsterdam_Amsterdam_NL_3|506164_6838934___216*_Lisse_Lisse_NL_3&options=optimal|STANDARD|bicycle|avoid_highways||2012-03-19%2017%3A00| 3 Their is no train station in Lisse. Here is a map of the Dutch railway, you could go to a place close to Lisse for example Nieuw Vennep For a bike you buy a day ticket, € 6 so its a return ticket for your bike, no matter what the distance is. ticket information and prices on the next site; http://www.ns.nl/en/travellers/home 4 around Lisse, Hillegom and Noordwijkerhout. De Keukenhof seems to sell bicycle routes. You could contact them for information. http://www.keukenhof.nl/en/18/brochures.html or asked the tourist information http://www.iamsterdam.com/de/visiting http://www.iamsterdam.com/en/visiting/touristinformation/contactatcb Lisse has also a tourist info but the link to English/German doesn't work. 5 I think the tourist information can give you a lot of options. Something special might be Ford Pampus, its lying on a small island close to Amsterdam. A bicycle trip on the dikes next to the ijsselmeer, towards Edam http://www.vvv-edam.nl/index.php?pagina=&type= Marken, Monnickendam, volendam http://www.vvv-volendam.nl/nl/welcome/ might be interesting. http://www.vvv-waterland.nl/welcome.asp?lang=0 The whole coastline towards Hoorn / Enkhuizen is beautiful. The area above Zandvoort, left to Haarlem is also nice. Lots of bycicle tracks through the dunes.
