Q&A
  • Best way to get from Athens to Lefkada? Hi, I will be in Greece late May this year and need to get from Athens to Lefkada. I have heard you can get a bus which takes about 5 hours, or you can fly to Preveza. I have found flights online from Athens to Preveza which were about $50 euro. Does anyone know how much the bus trip is, and if you are able to book online beforehand? Or do you just wait until you are in Athens and do it then? I would also be interested to know if the bus trip is worth doing, as I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of the Greek countryside from within a bus along the way, or am I just better off flying?
    • Zoi is completely wrong (what the heck has Nafpaktos and Giannina got to do with Lefkada!!!!)- the bus is an easy option - I will find the exact price for you later today (as my friend came up this weekend from Athens to Preveza ) There is a direct bus to Lefkada - I believe they are about 3 times a day - Athens - Preveza more often. OK flight - flights are more than Euro 50 - the planes are small and they are approx 3 times a week - maybe more in late May. If the weather is bad they have been known to turn round and return to Athens - this happened to my friends on my wedding day!!!! I (as a local) would always choose the bus. It takes 5 (or slightly more) hours - it takes the national road from Athens to Patra (2.30hrs) - then over the magnificent BRIDGE (sorry Zoi - no more ferry rides) at Rio to Andirrio. That's incredible! Then the scenery greatly improves (only spoilt by the road passing Agrinio) for a further 2.30hrs direct to Lefkada! ALL NATIONAL ROADS - no roads as described by Zoi. We make this journey at least 26 times a year - as I always have business/ or pleasure in Athens) The bus trip is well worth doing! Standing in Athens airport - waiting for the flight - flying - waiting for luggage - making your way from Lefkada from Preveza airport with take you nearly the same time as travelling via coach - but you will miss the incredible views! Don't know about booking online - best to get to the bus station early - if you are not travelling on or around a public holiday or weekend - the bus should be quite empty. Peggy - Zoi - please refer to the map posted by Ioanna - the bus DOES NOT pass through Nafpaktos - nor Ioannina - nor is there a ferry to Lefkada from Athens!!!!!!!! I've does the journey thousands of times!!!!!! I live in Preveza - 10 mins away from Lefkada town!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish people would not give wrong answers! I can tell you the route - Athens (bus station Kiffisou) I can tell you every town you pass! National road to Korinthos (new national road to missed the town centre) pass Korinthos head towards Patra - before Patra turn at Rio - take bridge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rio_Antirio_dsc06218.jpg (there hasn't been a need to use a ferry between the 2 for years!) over to Antirrio - up towards Agrinio (the turn to Nafpaktos will be on your right after the bridge - DO NOT take this TURN) Pass Agrino and head towards Amfilochia - then to Lefkada! Cross the tiny boat/bridge onto Lefkada island and you will arrive in Lefkada town at the NEW bus station which is situated a little out of the town centre. DONE! National roads - the only windy patch of roads is Amfilochia - Lefkada which is approx 1hr - not dangerous roads and NOT a mountainous area - just beautiful green scenery! http://www.lefkada-island.biz/lefkada-buses.htm Here's the map - Use this link and put in Athens (Greece) Lefkada (Greece) and it will show you a detailed MAP http://route.rac.co.uk/ Peggy - maybe you are referring to another bus route and NOT the Athens-Lefkada one. THANK YOU TREK - was beginning to think I was living in another country from everyone else!!!!
  • Planning a trip to Greece? I know it sounds really weird to be planning this far ahead of time, but my friends and I are planning a trip to Greece in our mid-twenties. (We are in college) I was wondering if anyone has been there, and seeing what prices we could be estimating. We want to fly there, from Missouri. Then rent a RV that we could drive around Greece, and sleep in there. We would be there for about a month, depending all the main places we want to go. (Any suggestions?)
    • Apart from the already suggested places I would add: Delphi, Meteora, Vergina, Kastoria, Ioannina and to get a whole view of Greece a boat trip along the Agion Oros peninsula. Then a round trip of the Peloponnese with Olympia, Epidavros, Mycenae, Corinth will complete the picture. Coming to Greece and not seeing at least an island is like haven't seen anything. Santorini or Myconos or Crete will just conclude your trip to its maximum. If you google each of the places mentioned you will get a taste of what will come, should you decide to visit them.
  • how much a return fare from patras to delphi? Hello there, I will be traveling from Patras to Delphi in April then back down to Olympia where I will start a long distance dance back to Britain (www.lifestreamfrequency.org) and am wondering wether taking the bus might not be too expensive or wether I should stick to original plan of hitching. Also do they allow bicycles on greek buses? Thankyou ever so much, Dana x
    • Hi, I will not respond to your question directly because I do not know the price for the specific fare and I cannot find the information online, but I will comment on the details of your questions and then point you to where you should look for your answer. Airpole has given very good advice and good information. Let me explain a bit further. Taking a bike on a bus is not recommended in Greece for two reasons: a) trips between cities are made via coach, so the only room left to store a bike is in the luggage compartment, which would make it necessary for the bike to be foldable (so that it can be handled in a better way and leave room for other stuff; not that there is a specific prohibition for non-foldable bikes, as far as I know; anyway, have it checked) b) bus routes inside cities are made on regular single-floor buses which may not be of the latest design/technology/frequency, so you will probably have problems finding a spacious bus which is not crowded already and does not have stairs or any other sort of impediment (including the driver's patience) to bringing your bicycle with you. I have the impression that things in Athens and Thessaloniki are very organized (different urban transport means, cheap fares etc), in contrast to things in Patras (but let's not start this discussion... :-)) Also, I do not know how much hitching is recommended whether you are alone (for safety reasons, as Airpole wisely pointed out) or not (for reasons of safety as well as ease and comfort; although Greeks are not insensitive, and they would like to help tourists that mean well (and with whom they can communicate - a bit of English is rather common knowledge nowadays), are you sure you will find a driver to help you out in time /for the specific routes you are interested in /during the weather conditions that you may encounter on your journey etc?). Another thing to keep in mind is that from the 9th of April and for two weeks, we will have the holidays of Easter in Greece, something which will affect traffic, transport timetables, activities and opening/closing hours for offices and shops. Every time you make a plan, ask about these dates to make sure you will not be given wrong information. The link http://achaiaktel.gr/ is the link for the "inter-city" coach starting from Patras and going to a few basic destinations only (Athens, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Pyrgos(=Tower) being a few of them). It does not cover Delphi or Olympia. a. To get to Delphi from Patras by bus, you will have to take the coach of "KTEL FOKIDAS" (Service for "inter-city" buses for the region of Phocis /Fokida - Central Greece), which departs from a different bus station in Patras (compared to "KTEL ACHAIAS", the service for the region of Patras - Achaia). -- Bus route: http://www.ktel-fokidas.gr/?module=default&pages_id=32&lang=en -- Contact Information: http://www.ktel-fokidas.gr/?module=default&pages_id=6&lang=en b. To get to Olympia from Patras by bus, you will have to take a bus from Patras to Pyrgos and then from Pyrgos to Olympia (using "KTEL ILEIAS" for the region of Il(e)ia - Western Greece /Peloponnese). It seems that you can begin in Patras either from station "KTEL ACHAIAS" or station "KTEL ILEIAS", but I do not know details. -- Bus route, part 1: http://achaiaktel.gr/?module=default&pages_id=42&lang=el (Note: Generally you cannot make reservations online if your travel is later than a week, because the information is not yet updated, and I could not find Pyrgos on the list!!) OR http://www.ktelileias.gr/index.php/routes/yperastika/pyrgos-patra -- Bus route, part 2: http://www.ktelileias.gr/index.php/routes/topika/pyrgos-olympia -- Prices through KTEL ILEIAS: http://www.ktelileias.gr/index.php/2009-07-04-12-15-49/prices -- Contact Information: http://www.ktelileias.gr/index.php/contact I would not recommend ktel.org just because of the prices (national call price range): http://ktel.org/index.php?pathID=1_2_2780_2797. Last but not least: do not count on coaches having toilets available. Ask if the driver is going to have a break and for how long, and how long the route will last. If it is an Express line, there will be no intermediate stops, I think. I hope it helps. Good luck!!!
