  • Where can I get info. or find ethnic/black hair salons in Paris? I am an American going to school in Amiens and I need to find somewhere to maintain my dreadlocks. I have never been to Paris before so I have no idea where black people go to get their hair done. Any suggestions on how I can find this information?
    • Yet while Paris has a proud traditon of openess and tolerance; there has never been a guide book for blacks on how to navigate the labyrinth that is Paris. Melinda Herron, the author of The Insider Guide To Black Paris has done something about that. In the Guide: Introduction History: Paris and People of Color. Museums/Galleries. • How do I get from Amiens city centre to Cimetière paysager de la Madeleine? My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Paris in May, with a day trip to Amiens, mostly to see the home and grave of Jules Verne. According to Google Maps, it looks like a 40 minute walk to get from Notre Dame de l'Amiens to Cimetière paysager de la Madeleine. According to the city's tourism brochures, bus route 5 goes by the cemetery, but I can't find any information about the bus routes, stops or prices. I considered renting bicycles as well, but can't find any information about that either. Do you have any recommendations for how to get from the city centre to the cemetery?
    • The local bus in Amiens is called ametis, and the B9 bus runs from the train station to the cemetery. Link to schedule below. Individual tickets are 1,20€, or you can get a day pass for 3,45€ from the bus office near the train station.
  • What is the best town/city, under 2 hours on the train from Calais to visit for a day? Myself, 15, and 2 friends, both 16, are going to France for a day (getting the ferry from Dover to Calais). We don't want to spend more than 2 hours on the train from Calais, as we don't want to spend the whole day travelling. The towns/cities we have been looking at are: Lille, Bruges (in Belgium), Brussels (in Belgium), and Amiens. We were considering Paris, but the price for the train would be too expensive. Are there any places we have missed out? or if not, which place would be best (we are young remember, so cathedrals etc. are not what we are looking for) Cheers, Alex
    • You say you are not into cathedrals so forget about Amiens. The most beautiful of the others you mention is definitely Bruges, which is like stepping into a genuine medieval city. It has these canals and is effectively the Venice of the North so a boat trip is a must. It is also very compact and it has a good shopping centre, shops that sell exquisite chocs, and masses of restaurants on the main square as well as an easy to reach Mac Donald's. It is a essentially a Flemish town. Brussels is a capital, so very busy. It has a spectacular Grande Place and lots of narrow quaint streets around it and the shops are in a different area. There is the Atomium which is their equivalent tourist site to the Eiffel tower. Most people there speak French rather than Flemish and there are the headquarters of the EU located there as well. Lille is a mixture of ancient and modern. It also is very big city with a lot of shops and is full of bustle. It has the ancient Lille area which is quite pictureque but not as striking as Bruges, or Brussels and an enormous shopping pedestrian area. Some people do not like it because it is too big and it has all the same international shops you find everywhere else. I am a teenager, and I thought the most striking and memorable was Bruges, but if you are not interested in historic buildings go for the shops.
