Q&A
  • I am looking for a Bosch hammer rotary drill that is all metal no plastic and comes in a silver metal case loo? Looks like aluminum caae. I need to find it in the internet and the price of its value. The label has Bulldog written on it.
    • That will be a tall order to fill. Ever since they converted to double insulated tools, plastic is top dog and has been for years. New ones are going for a bit over 200.00
  • Why do Americans have so many bathrooms? I've just been reading some house plans (from American websites) and I can't help but notice how many bathrooms you guys all seem to have/want. I've heard reference to this in movies and books, and read that houses with only one bathroom don't even sell for the asking price - is this so undesirable? * I'm from Australia and we have a bathroom (shower, bathtub, hopefully one day a sink - for now we just use the bath) and a toilet. We also have an outside toilet across the backyard. Most of the people I know from my hometown also have a set up like ours (although not the outside loo, if they have a second it's in/near the laundry). Occassionally parents have an ensuite aswell. I do recognise that newer houses for the upper middle class increasingly have 2 bathrooms, but I think maybe it's because we've been following the US as most people my age (19) grew up with one for at least half of their life, so I think it's only a new thing? * I was also thinking of what implications this might have - environmentally, socially etc. From observing families with seperate bathrooms, it appears that they live more segregated lives, and don't appear to like sharing. This can also be said of TVs/Computers in multiple rooms. I would just like your thoughts. Concerning girls hogging the bathroom, I understand that it happens, but girls here tend to do their hair and makeup in their own rooms, because we have a mirror there too. Also, in most parts of the country you are supposed to have 4 minute showers (or else dramatically cut down on water in other parts of your life to compensate for your long showers). If not, you'll end up with a water bill, which may be hefty. And if you shower too long in rural areas (i.e. My farm) your tanks will run out of water, and you'll have none til it next rains (unless you are able to transport it from elsewhere). I know that is slightly off the point but I think it has at least a little to do with it. We had a family of four and no one really battled. We each just used it when needed, and if we all had to go, we just waited til it was free. Maybe Americans really like thing "right now" instead of slowing things down a bit, not rushing, waiting a while. My family is pretty casual, I guess that just extend
    • In the newer houses in the US, there are more bathrooms. In the older houses, there is usually just one or maybe a second half bath (just a toilet). I live on a farm, the house was built by my great uncle about fifty years ago, and we only have one bathroom. My parents house was built forty years ago and they have one full bath, and one half bath. I honestly think it's sort of a status thing. If people have enough money, they will build enough bathrooms so every member of the household has their own, plus an additional bath for guests. People seem to like to brag about the number of bathrooms that they have, if they can afford it. When I was in school I had a friend who's family had a lot of money. Her family had at least six bathrooms! They had more bathrooms than people. I also think it depends what part of the US you're in. If it's an area that is somewhat older, with older houses, they won't have more than one or two bathrooms. In the US, a lot of people have city water if it's a more populated area, so they pay for the amount of water that they use. I have a well, so our water gets pumped up to the house by an electric pump, so we just pay for the electricity used rather than the amount of water we use. Personally I'd just like to know.. who wants to clean that many bathrooms? Not me! :)
  • Should I sell my London House? I am a single 44 yrs old guy who has a 3 bedroom house. I rent all of the rooms and keep and live in one room myself. The house is valued at £350,000 and I owe £185,000 mortgage to the bank. I don't know whether to cash in and take the £150,000 profit and go and get a life or continue being a landlord living with 4 other tenants sharing the kitchen and bathroom. My only concern is property prices go down I could loos that profit. I would be interested to hear what any one out there would do if in my position??
    • Here's another idea - what about letting out the entire house to one tenant - far less hassle and wear and tear. Then you would be looking at a gross income of about £300 a week. Even after mortgage costs you will still have enough left over to get something where you can be alone. At 44 you are too old to be living in one room.

think i have a drain smell? Hi. I had my loo unblocked a few weeks ago by a plumber. He actually did it for me at a cheaper price because of what he quoted me on the phone but it turned out to be a bigger job. There was 45 quid on my side in the kitchen and the next morning there was £20 missing. Im 100% he stole it from me. (my own fault from leaving money out i guess) well now there is a really bad smell in my bathroom, Im hoping its just the drainage has been unsettled and it will go away? He had to take the loo off to get to the blockage (make up! again my fault) but im also wondering if he may of done something for me to call him out again? Obviously i wouldn't use him again anyway but i really don't want to have to call a plumber out again. I live in a block of flats and i am bottom floor so my loo is at the bottom of the stack. Any ideas what could be causing the smell?
    • Assuming you flush it with some regularity, your toilet should not smell. There are several possibilities of which I am aware. The seal (made of wax) may have been damaged by your "bargain" plumber, a cat may have come in and availed itself of your floor, (dogs have also been known to make messes) you could have inadvertently spilled kidney pie in your bathroom. Of these choices, the first one is probably the culprit. Unless you feel particularly adventurous, you have little choice except to call out another plumber...preferably one that doesn't steal. Good luck, and keep your money in a better place this time, to avoid tempting the plumber!
