There is a huge Shopping Mall close to the Eurostar terminal right in the centre of Lille, at the end of which there is a giant Carrefour. Carrefour are not renowned for their service but you will find everything imaginable there from cheese to bicycles, including Nikon cameras, and the attendants on the stand that sell that kind of thing are reasonably informed. CROUS, the student organization, may have a list of apts. for rent. Check with your university if there are dorms. Dorms can be a great value. Craigslist.org is a possibility though I always worry about scams. If you are looking in person, look for the signs "chambres a louer"-- rooms for rent (bath/shower is usually in the hall). Other terms used on signs: Type 1 or F1 (1 room or studio usually with private bath). Type or F2 (1 bdroom with bath). Warning: Many places charge you extra for water use. Gas/electric almost never included. You will most likely have to buy everything to furnish the apt.: light globes, towel bars, toilet paper holder, stove, oven (small plug in one will work), fridge, etc. Another place to look is via realtors. Normally, the landlord pays the fees to the realtor. Be prepared for windows W/O screens. Yeah, there are mosquitoes in France. If you can bring with you large, flexible screening material and a heavy duty stapler, you can save yourself alot of grief. Another way to do it is to bring a small window screen which you might get to fit some windows (e.g. one that you can push up and down) and secure it with some tape whenever you open the windows. There is a method of getting to Lille from Beauvais without going into Paris but it is horrendous. Take a regional train from Beauvais to Creil, change trains - another train to Amiens, change trains, another train to Douai, finally change trains for the third time - a train to Lille. The journey time is around 5 hours. We just do not see why you are flying to Beauvais if you are going to Lille as they are 200 kilometres apart. Why if you are flying from the UK are you using the world's worst airline (Ryanair) when you can sit in a comfortable, relaxing Eurostar seat for 90 minutes for just £37 from London all the way to Lille. Also food and drink are 50% cheaper on Eurostar and it is wholesome - unlike "Ryanair"!!!!

Life in Lille is very expensive. After Paris it is one of the main agglomerations in France, and it also is a university town which means that all the cheaper accommodation is taken up by students.
