Q&A
  • Looking to buy a good bass and amp within a $400-600 price range? Any suggestions?
    • The best thing is to try some out in stores and decide what you like. But for suggestions, I would normally say split your money evenly between the bass and the amp, though it depends on what context you'll be playing in; if you're just practicing in your bedroom, you don't need much of an amp, but if you're playing gigs, you NEED a certain amount of volume and may need to skimp on the bass to get a strong enough amp. With $600 max budget, I'd suggest getting a Squier from the vintage modified or classic vibe lines. There are several models, all running around $300 - personally I like the full-scale Jaguar. For an amp, look for a combo with 100 watts. I'd suggest going to www.carvin.com and getting one of their micro bass combos - the MB10 is about $300 (shipping will run you over budget some), it has 200 watts but only a 10-inch speaker, but you can get an extension cab for more gig volume later and it will be fine for practice and jams in the meantime.
  • What is the value of a Carvin Legacy VL212 tube amplifier? I have a Steve Vai Signature Model Carvin Legacy VL212 tube guitar amplifier. It is the combination model with the head built in the cabinet. I've owned it for about 6 years and no longer use it because it's too loud and hard to transport for what I do. I'm looking to sell it, but I have no idea what it is worth. I can't find any prices online. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
    • Take a look at this one and see if it is what you have. This one sold for $350. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carvin-Legacy-VL212-/290845616051?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43b7bfe7b3
  • I need a new guitar amp, suggestions? I've had a Marshall head and Carvin cab for a while now, and i'm realizing that it's just way too much sound for a bedroom sound. The volume on 0.5 or 1 is pretty loud, lol. I'll be trading these in soon so I can get a new amp with the money I get for trade in. I want a good combo amp that can play clean and metal, since I mainly play Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment. It also has to sound low on a mildly low setting, since it'll be in a bedroom. My price range is about $400-$450. Any ideas?

Buying a bass amp... and I need help!? I recently decided to revamp my music collection. And that involves my crappy line 6 bass amp. I am going to buy a new one, a cab and a head separately. Since I like to play funky, jazzy stuff with a lot of high tones and punch (I absolutely hate that muddy sound), I am going with a used Ampeg cab with 4 10" speakers. is that a safe bet? Also, for the head... I am trying to keep this all below $400. I am looking for a clean, natural sound, but I can't afford an old tube amp. I recently found a Carvin head from 1974. It is solid state. How will a solid state amp from that time period sound? I also found a 1987 Carvin head. Will that sound better? How will all that compare to a Peavey Mark VI bass amp? I could get a Behringr Bx3000t for the same price. Is that my best bet? I also found a Peavey T-max 550 watt unit, still out of my price range as it is a tube unit, but how will that compare to the other units? It is only $100 more, is it worth it?
    • I use the line6 lowdown combo, 300w and a get a great variety of sound out of it and am quite pleased with my purchase, but if you require the cab and head go for it, more power if you need it lol

PA Speakers - Carvin vs. Peavey? Has anybody done a listening comparison between the Peavey PR12s or 15s and the Carvin LM 12s or 15s? The specs and price are very similar, and both companies make good gear. Anybody actually heard them? preferably side by side.
    • I would go with the Carvins. 15 definitely. Don't even think about smaller speaker size unless you want your stuff sounding like it comes from a transistor radio.
  • Eon or Carvin or other? Please help me choose a good company for speakers to put my entire band's sound through. Please compare the prices, quality, and ease of use. I'm thinking two speakers (left and right) that can produce stereo sound.
    • OK, If you're mic'ing drums you need 15" . Eons are powered - so you run right from the line out of the mixer into the speakers. How much power do you need? If you're playing loud guitar amps in big rooms or outside you'll need the G2s -400 watts($700 ea) If you're playing small clubs, the P-1s will work -180 watts($450.) The Carvin LM15A is 350 watts for $440. and 10 lbs lighter - they are supposed to be as good as the EON G2s. I haven't heard them but I have other Carvin stuff and it's great. We set off all the car alarms in a church parking lot once with a kick drum through our Carvin 880. If you go with powered speakers remember that you'll nee long mic cables to hook them up.
