  • Did Michelle Obama Really Spend $50,000 on Lingerie in ‘One Shopping Spree’? US Did Michelle Obama Really Spend $50,000 on Lingerie in ‘One Shopping Spree’? Posted on January 30, 2012 at 2:15am by Scott Baker Print »Email » Comments (532)EDITOR’S NOTE: There is an important update to this story at the bottom of this article! BONUS UPDATE: In addition to the updated information below — the White House is now strong denying the Telegraph report. You can read that report here. Agent Provocateur is a store that sells serious lingerie — “the most erotic lingerie in the world.” Michelle Obama apparently went shopping there. So now there’s a headline that really tempts you to click: But a couple of things aren’t clear to me. The least which — can you really spend $50,000 on lingerie? My main question is — how does The Telegraph know this? The headline and the article seem to be a little out of sync. In the headline, the $50k and the 12% sales jump are tied to the First Lady alone. But take a look at the article: The First Lady – better known for shopping at more modestly-priced High Street stores – along with the Queen of Qatar, Sheikha Mozah, closed off part of Madison Avenue to spend time in the luxury lingerie shop. Their purchases contributed to a market-spanking 12.5pc lift in sales. Agent Provocateur, which is styled on vintage Hollywood glamour, sells handmade Calais lace corsets that sell for up to £900, which could ruffle the feathers of more than just President Barack Obama in an election year. Gary Hogarth, Agent Provocateur’s chief executive, refused to be drawn on the store’s closely kept “secret client list”. But he admitted the brand had attracted a high number of “unexpected famous names” – especially in the US, where sales have overtaken the UK
    • If his had been Bush wife, liberal would screaming at the top of there lungs
  • Birthday trip to France? Travelling to Calais on Friday and would like to have lunch there (group of 4 of us between 20yrs and 50yrs). Can you give us some recommendations. We don't have loads of money so somewhere reasonably priced is preferable. The address would be appreciated too.
    • Hi - there's actually a big choice of restaurants in Calais - here's just a few: Cafe de Paris 72, rue Royale - http://www.cafedeparis-calais.com/modulosite2/accueil.htm - check their website for prices and menu; Le Calice, 55 Boulevard Jacquard http://www.lecalice.com/modulosite2/fiche.php?id=84&fr=1 again check website for prices and menu - v Flemish and finally for seafood how about Le Channel 3 Boulevard de la Résistance http://www.restaurant-lechannel.com/. Wherever you go - hope its a happy birthday meal!
  • Hiring a car - is it ok to hire from country you are going to? I'm thinking of hiring a car this year to go to The Netherlands. I went on National Car's UK website and got a quote. The price was £855 for a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Auto (I'm going for auto 'cos I can only drive auto due to having Dyspraxia and only having an automatic licence) for 21 days from Calais to Calais. I then went on National.fr (the French version of the site) and got a quote. The price there was in Euros and after conversion it was only £377 for the same car, same duration, same pick-up location and everything. Now I'm really confused. Obviously at £377 I'd certainly consider the car rental, but I'm certainly not going for the £855 option. Firstly though I'm wondering why the massive price difference for the same car from the same place for the same time for us Brits in comparison to the French, also considering that the vehicle is in France and being picked up from France, surely it can't be tax or anything 'cos as I would be in France at the time would I not be paying the same tax as the French or do you pay British tax if your British in France?? Now I'm wondering if that price is only open to people in France, or is it the case that anyone regardless of where their driving licence is for or where they live can order that deal? I'm just absolutely confused by it all, and more confused as to such a high price difference. The only one difference I can see is that the French one seems to be restricted to 3,000 kilometers where as the British one is unlimited mileage, but the unlimited mileage is useless to me as I've calculated my journey to the Netherlands to be just 628km there and back (I'm going to Nederweert) so can hardly see me using a further 2,372km whilst I'm there anyway.
    • yes but the lights may need changing and of course license plate

  • does anyone know the price of golden virginia tobacco on p & o dover to calais ferry?
    • I don't know but it is cheaper in Belgium. Go to Veurne, just past Dunkirk and buy it wholesale
  • France (Calais) day trip and "booze cruise" question? Does anyone know the best shop/warehouse/supermarket for which to buy cheap alcohol when arriving in Calais? I've not done a day trip to stock up before so wondered where the best place to go is. Just the normal wine, beer etc. I don't want to have to travel in land very far. I know the euro rate isn't that brilliant at the moment but expect there still be some good prices? Thanks
    • Are you going on foot or driving? If you are driving, here are the best hypermarkets in Calais. You can click on each to get directions and a map to get there. http://www.dover-to-calais.com/auchan_calais.htm Auchan generously name their biggest rivals and you only have to click on the names to find their whereabouts. We regularly stock up in Calais but we prefer to avoid driving in the centre, which can be quite hair raising, let alone parking. Along the years we have found that the best choice offered for wine and beer is actually often at the Auchan hypermarket and near-by Sainsbury's. It is easy to get to on the Calais by-pass, and the same facilities of payment in £ as well as € exist there too with a very fair rate of exchange on the slip. We bought some Roc-de- Lussac there for four Euros a bottle and found that the same bottles were sold for £12 in England. Liqueurs and other spirits are also cheaper there than on the ferries or at the Euro tunnel shop and considerably cheaper than in England. At the moment there are some great pre-Christmas offers. We bought excellent Champagne at a very good price only ten days ago.
  • what is the price for a 1990 oldsmobile cutlass calais transmission?

  • What is the prices of Mayfair cigarettes in France? Can someone please tell me the price of Mayfair cigarettes in France? Preferably from a location near Calais and/or the UK border. Thank you.
    • Cigarettes are cheaper in France. There are various warehouses in Calais in the port area or just past Belgium border at Adenkerk, where a lot of smugglers go. I don't think I have ever seen Mayfair on sale in France.
