Q&A
  • Anime with orphan character? I'm looking for an anime with a good story that has either the main character or a prominent main character as an orphan (abandoned as a child counts, too). I like romance, but it doesn't have to be the focus of the story. I don't like moe, and I would prefer minimal to no ecchi. I like Fruits Basket, Gakuen Babysitters, and Love So Life, all of which touched on the idea. I also like the basic principles from Mayaoi Neko Overrun, but the anime was so dependent on sophomoric humor and bad dialogue that I got sick of it and stopped watching.
    • Fantastic Children - Thoma tries to help a girl he likes escape from an orphanage. A good sci-fi/fantasy anime with romance, but you have to be cool with not having any idea what's going on for the first half of the series. Black Butler (so obvious I hesitate to mention it.) Ciel Phantomhive has sold his soul in exchange for a demon butler to help him avenge the murder of his parents. Good story, fun, ghoulish characters, but no romance. Happy Lesson - A bit goofy, but it settles down after a few episodes. Chitose is an orphaned 17-year-old who lives on his own. He keeps getting in trouble, and five of his teachers decide that he needs a mom, so they all move in with him and adopt him...against his will. Not much romance. Midori Days - Seiji is another orphan delinquent living on his own, and all he wants is a girlfriend. One morning he wakes up to find that his hand has transformed into a cute girl who is in love with him. Romance, a bit moe, though. xxxHolic - Watanuki is an orphan who can see spirits. One day he is drawn to the door of Yuuko, a witch who can grant any wish, for a price. Soon he is working as her houseboy. Some romance (one-sided!) and a fun series. Spiral - An orphaned teen detective investigates the mysterious disappearance of his older brother. Just a little romance. Series is really good, but the ending is bad. (Must read manga to finish story.) My Santa - A boy named Santa who was born on Christmas is depressed because his parents are off working in another country and NEVER come home. A girl appears and claims she is a Santa-Claus-in-training, and it's her mission to make him happy. Minor ecchi.
  • Do you think of Michael Corleone as a character to look up to?
    • That's what the character wants. He wants to be respected and seen as someone legitimate. But he's caught in a world where one's power and legitimacy is based on violence and intimidation. Michael avoids this as a young man, but once he sees that his family is in jeopardy, he realizes that he has to play by the rules their business has established and accepted. There's a scene in Part Two where Hyman Roth is confronting Michael about Moe Green's assassination (for which Michael was responsible in Part One). Roth tells him "this is the business we've chosen." Roth understands that as much as they are trying to go legitimate (i.e., with the casinos in Cuba), their life is not the same as "normal" lives. For that desire to do things "cleanly," you have to admire the character. But in the end, when all those around him are gone...eliminated...you see where he is. Alone, with nothing but his own thoughts and memories. And you realize the price he paid to end up where he did. That's hard to admire.

  • My purebred is turning out to look moe and more like some other dog...? I purchased my first own puppy from a popular small dog store. I went in looking for a pomeranian but fell in love with what supposedly was a miniature dachshund. The lady showed me pictures of her parents and paperwork and assured me that she was pure, so unfortunately I trusted her and paid a the full amount for a purebred mini dachshund ($500). Through the first year I noticed that she wasnt as plump and stubby like a regular dachshund, but thought nothing of it cause she still had a lot to grow. Eventually her legs wouldnt stop growing and is now the length of a chihuahua... My sister kept telling me "oh she has a really big forehead kinda like a chihuahua face.." I have taken her out and every time someone is always like "Is that a dachshund?" One man even told me he was sure it looked like a chihuahua-dachshund mix... She's two years old now and no she is not getting a longer face and her legs are long and her body is not getting longer horizontally either... She's been apart of the family when I brought her home, so I dont plan to abandon a family member..but I dont feel like I should have paid $500 for a mutt. I could get a two mutts for less than half that price. Not only that she has had some severe illnesses and shakes like a chihuahua... I'm thinking that she has at least 1/4 chihuahua in her blood...The other day I was at petsmart and saw a lady with a dachshund and was like "Aww how cute. I have a mini one." and she was like "Oh this is a mini..." I asked her if it was a male, but it was a female... the same age as mine... My dog walked next to it and she looked like a mutt :I I have all the paperworks saved for my dog also "AKC" paperwork which is some bs. What should I do? I want to keep her because i've already but thousands of dollars into her medical and other necessities...and she's part of the family...Please dont be rude because everyone does stupid shit and I'm sure you've all been scammed before.
    • Have an expert like a mini dachshund breeder or vet examine the dog and give you a signed affidavit (preferably notarized) stating that the dog is not a pure bred dachshund. Ifs its not you can confront the pet shop owner with the affidavit and ask for some of your money back or just file a claim in small claims court. You also may want to let the AKC know that the pet shop and or breeder is issuing false AKC documents. There is also a way to determine your dogs breed via a DNA test so I would also discuss this with your Vet.
  • Are Sabre piston AR-15s worth the high price? Are they better in any discernible way than most other piston ARs? Like, say, a Bushmaster MOE piston carbine, or a S&W M&P15 PS, which are around 5-600$ less?

  • A price to pay for pushing the kids too hard in their study? Today, I read the article, a P6 student trying to jump dwn from the school building..... Possibilities there are 2 factors affecting the above 1) Playing a prank 2) Stressful from the School workload. Recently, I had attended my son's meet the parents day in school. I realised that for students in P5 now, the teacher are gearing vey hard on them for the P6 PSLE. But had the school or MOE realise that every student had a limit to that (stress). We should not always aim for school to be No.1 in everything, ranking, sports, maths, PSLE etc. We should let the child expose to natural learning.... ,more expose to natural environment, journey learning about trees,plants......basic literature reading in the open natural envirnment... Singapore is getting really worse to worst especially in the school teaching and pushing the students... STUDY TO BE NO 1...... SAD TO SEE THAT.....WILL THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION LOOK INTO THAT... THANK YOU. BOTTOM OF MY HEART WORRY PARENT
    • I AGREE WITH YOU. The Singapore education system is too stressful some times. But then again, people are Singapore's main resource so that's why MOE pushes us to excellence. And Singapore is so small and competitive. Parents just have to make their own changes in the way they teach their kids and maybe in time, we'll realise studies aren't everything. Good luck. =)
