Q&A
  • How much could I get for a 14k/ 20 gram gold chain? I have one that was in the family jewelry box that im thinking of selling tomorrow, but I have no idea where to start. I don't want to overcomplicate things so im thinking of just taking it to a cash for gold place & see what they offer me, but I have heard of them being lowballing the hell out of people.I understand they are a business and need to make profit as I am a businessman too (in a different field of course) but theres a point where profit turns into taking advantage of someone. Do all gold places pay the same? Is negotiation possible at all? Is Craigslist trouble for selling gold? (I very frequently use CL so im not asking if its trouble using this site at all, a lot of people are scared to use it but Im from the "hood" so I know how to protect myself, I understand the risk as I have met all types of aggressive people im asking specifically for gold) Anyone can feel free to add any extra info. Thanks!
    • 24k (pure) gold is currently worth $1,596/troy ounce. A troy ounce is 31.1 grams. 14k gold is 58.3% pure gold and has a meltdown value of about $30/gram, so your chain would be worth about $600. Be careful, as many of these cash for gold places only pay you about 50% of its true value. Most local jewelers pay you 75-85% of the meltdown value. Another place I found with fair prices is West Coast Gold Buyers from Southern California (www.wcgoldbuyers.com) and they do have some Bay Area offices.
  • Best place to buy natural green coffee bean? I am from UK. Recommend me some trusted place to buy natural green coffee bean
    • Visit Ghana (Gold Coast) and you will find many farms of coffee plantation. You can buy fresh coffee pods full of fresh coffee beans at a very cheap price and then get it shipped to U.K.
  • How to pick a longboard for beginners? I am a COMPLETE beginner with longboarding. I have only stood on a skateboard once or twice let alone a longboard. I have been wanting to try it for a really long time. It's just that I don't know where to start. Sliding and carving looks awesome and at a point where I get good I want to be able to freestyle or dance. I just want to start with the basics: Buy a board. I want to get one that is a good price though, I don't want to break the bank and get one that is made for pros, but I don't want to get a cheap one that no one should buy because of the crappy quality. I want an affordable longboard that is good for beginners that can maybe do freestyle but mainly carve. Please help!!
    • Well, since you're just beginning I highly suggest a pintail shaped board. The most you can do at this point is probably just stand on a board correct? So, you need to get used to everything first. I'd check out the Gold Coast Floater 44" here: http://thelongboardstore.com/longboards/gold-coast-/44-classic-turquoise-floater-complete/ They also have more colors as well. Or you can get a Sector 9 46" Bert here: http://thelongboardstore.com/longboards/sector-9/46-bert-longboard-complete/ Both insanely good boards for learning.
  • What are some nice, moderately priced hotels in Chicago? I'm looking for hotels that are relatively in "the center of it all." First time visiting and not that familiar with the various districts etc.
    • Most Chicago hotels and tourist sites are in a small area. Look in the Loop, Gold Coast, Mag Mile or River North. Prices vary a lot from day to day so go to a website and type in your budget. The Wit is very nice and can be cheap on weekends and Club Quarters can be very inexpensive.

  • Why does everyone keep telling me Bellevue is cheaper? I live in Honolulu, HI and everyone I met from the Seattle area keeps complaining that Honolulu is so expensive. I met a classmate today and he grew up in Bellevue, which is where I want to live. He told me Bellevue is much cheaper than Honolulu by far. I did my research and yes the average residents of the Seattle area have more disposable income compared to the average residents of Honolulu, However I think real estate wise its much worst. I was looking at the million dollar homes in the Gold Coast of Bellevue particularly Clyde Hill and Medina. Mansions were selling for 6-8 million dollars which is very comparable to the upscale neighborhoods in Honolulu such as Kahala, Portlock and Hawaii Loa Ridge. Yes the mansions in Clyde Hill and Medina is a bit larger than the mansions in the affluent parts of Honolulu by a few square feet. But property taxes are much higher compared to Honolulu. A mansion in Seattle worth $8,900,000 is taxed 44,500 dollars a year opposed to a 8,888,500 home in Hawaii Loa Ridge that is taxed 23,812 which is about half of which is paid in Seattle. I think living wise, Seattle is more economically better due to good business environments, no state income tax and more disposable income but its no place for mansion shopping once you are a millionaire. Average homes and upper middle class economy homes are much cheaper than Honolulu but if an average person making average money owns a home, he/she could actually be paying more taxes than a person living in Honolulu. I guess the lesson here is to be wise with money, experiencing a price drop when moving to another place might make you think everything is cheaper but there are other factors to consider. See the mansions for yourself: Medina, WA: http://www.trulia.com/property/1082436059-318-Overlake-Dr-E-Medina-WA-98039 Hawaii Loa Ridge, HI: http://www.trulia.com/property/3005807431-253-Puuikena-Dr-Honolulu-HI-96821
    • You're not comparing apples with apples. You are aware that each state/city has a different property tax rate, right? Bellevue for example is taxed at roughly 1% of its assessed value. So saying two homes listed for sale are so different because of their property taxes is not an accurate or correct way to compare properties. 1. You're comparing ASKING/LIST price of homes which have no relation whatsoever to actual market value. For all we know, it's overpriced or underpriced on the market. 2. You're taking two homes that might be at the top of the market or near the top. Bellevue has some homes that are priced really well and close to downtown. And you're just cherry picking two and trying to compare them. I've been to both Honolulu and Bellevue and I can honestly say that Bellevue is so much cheaper. Why? Because it's not a tourist hot spot with people from all over the world visiting compared to Honolulu.

  • what are reasonably priced and safe areas to rent around the gold coast or brisbane that have great schools? We are looking to move soon after christmas its hard not know what areas are like for yourself, we have a young son who is about to start school but has some learning difficulties, any recommendations for good areas with jobs available would be wonderful, thankyou :)
    • You need to define what is 'reasonably priced'- in some areas $700 a week is considered 'reasonably priced'. I'd pick the Logan area personally, there's some decent schools for special needs students if you want a specialist school, it's fairly low crime in most of the suburbs and it's situated between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It's been a while since I was last in that area to take much note of which suburbs are the worst for crime, so I won't give recommendations other than steer clear of Forest Lake- that USED to be a nice suburb but most of my friends who live in that area say it is NOT a nice place after dark.
  • bad customer service or totally my fault? Bad customer service or totally my fault? A gift shop at Mt Tambourine in Gold Coast. I picked up a soap from the shell shaped tray and put it back but it fell from the tray. Then the shop owner sighed and said "you damaged it" from 3m away where he couldn't even see that soap was damaged. I pick up and checked it but couldn't find any damage. So I told him no damage on it but he spotted on the corner of the soap was chipped off which was very very tiny bit and said "here" with threatening voice. I was scared of him, I asked "Should I pay for it?" He just kept saying "I can't sell it to anyone, it's damaged" with still threatening voice. There was no sign neither of "Do not touch" or "Breakage, Pay full price". Anyway, I paid full price for it with saying "sorry". He and his staff didn't say "Thank you" to me. Even it was my fault , no reason not to say "Thank you" as long as I became a customer. And even I paid for it, their attitude made me feel guilty. I felt sorry to my partner and the international student who homestays with us about bad experience because of me. My partner actually had been thinking of buying a Christmas gift from their shelves which cost more than $50. Of course never visit this shop again. Thanks for the answers. I didn't think of that the product might have been already damaged before I picked up. It actually sounds making sense as the owner reacted so quick. My partner asked his lawyer if I had to pay under this situation. Answer is "No", even they put the sign on.
    • It was bad customer service, there is nothing they could have done had you refused as you say they did not have any signed posted. Also they can`t prove you did it, it could have already been damaged when you picked it up. Even with signs posted unless you damaged it intentionally they could not have done anything. They would have just put it on sale as damaged goods if it was a good store. If anyone tried to do that to me I would have just walked out of the store never to return again.
  • how often do jetstar prices change? was browsing for some cheap flights the other day and found a good one for $69 from cairns to gold coast. was unsure of dates and left it for today to decide and now the price went up to $119, will there be a possibility that the prices will change again ?
    • plane ticket prices can change from minute to minute, hour to hour, day to day, week to week...... nobody can tell you whether they will change again or not. if they do it will most likely that they will be going UP not down though. $119 still isn't a bad deal though so i'd jump on it while you can.
